| | Members' Engaging Sociology | Shannon, B. 2022, Sex(uality) Education for Trans and Gender Diverse Youth in Australia. Cham: Palgrave Macmillan. |  | | This book examines young trans and gender diverse Australians’ views of school-based sex education. The analysis is informed by a queer epistemology that acknowledges the systematic and institutional erasure of trans subjectivities through highly medicalised systems of categorisation. Drawing on primary qualitative data, the author emphasises the accounts of trans and gender diverse young people as they relate to sex education at school, and how they undertake informal learning about sex, gender and identity in other areas of their lives. Ultimately, the book problematises the assumption that the sex education classroom is the most appropriate vehicle for social justice education in relation to queer issues. Queer issues and sex education tend to be packaged together discursively, deliberately or by association in dominant media narratives. However, this discourse constrains queer identities to the realm of sex and health, and therefore does not engage with the social citizenship of queer people. | | Gary Bouma Memorial Workshop Program | Sydney Food System Innovator Workshop | At the start of 2021, TASA introduced a new initiative, 'The Australian Sociological Association’s Workshop Program', which was subsequently renamed the Gary Bouma Memorial Workshop Program. While we appreciate the pandemic may continue to thwart scheduled events, we will continue to support and promote sociology where we can.
The Sydney Food System Innovator Workshop is one of two TASA funded workshops being held this year.

| Returning / Incoming Conveners
| This week, we are introducing you to the convener of the Environment and Society Thematic Group.
The Environment and Society thematic group was established in 2006. The group aims to bring together TASA members who have an interest in environmental issues and to stimulate wider interest in the field of environmental sociology. The objectives are:
- To provide a means of connection between sociologists who study or work in the area of environment and society.
- To promote environmental sociology to the wider sociological community and thus to encourage a stronger interest in society’s interaction with the environment among practising sociologists and sociology students.
- To strengthen relationships between Australian environmental sociology and international groups such as the International Sociological Association’s Research Committee on Environment and Society (RC24).
- To promote awareness outside academia of sociology’s potential contribution to environmental issues.
- To meet initially once yearly at the annual TASA conference to share research and study interests; identify opportunities to connect with external groups and agencies; discuss current topical issues, and to develop strategies that will enable communication within and promotion of the group.
The returning convener is David Reynolds.
| | David is currently a PhD candidate at in the Human Geography Department of Monash University. David is investigating the life of plastics in the household, with a focus on the material and on practices. David's research topic is titled 'The politics and practice of avoiding plastic in everyday life.' Fellow member, and past TASA President, Jo Lindsay is one of David's supervisors.

| Education as a realm of sociological studies
The Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the educational company “Vseosvita” kindly invite social researchers and educators from Australia (as well as from other countries) to take part in a round-table discussion titled “Education as a realm of sociological studies”. The discussion will be held on 12 March 2022. The event will start at 10 a.m. (UTC+2), which is 7:00pm AEDT. The participants can both deliver a presentation via Zoom and publish a short article on this topic in “Sociology: Theory, Methods, Marketing”, a peer-reviewed quarterly (http://en.stmm.in.ua).
