| TASA THURSDAYS - SAVE THE DATE
NORTHERN RIVERS HOUSING CRISIS | On August 11th, for another TASA Thursdays event, fellow member Josephine E Browne will facilitate a panel discussion on the Northern Rivers Housing Crises.
Panellists:
John Lee (You Have A Friend, Tweed Heads)
Jemima Mowbray (Policy and Advocacy Manager, Tenants' Union of NSW)
Brendan Ross (Coordinator, Northern Rivers Tenants Advice & Advocacy Service)
Simone Hickey (Financial Counsellor, Lismore)
Event description:
The flood crisis in the Northern Rivers focused national media attention on Lismore in March 2022. This attention raised the issues of emergency needs for housing, food, medical care and assistance for animals and pets. The floods, however, extended well beyond Lismore, affecting the whole of the Northern Rivers region of NSW. Already, this region faced many challenges, not least due to the increased costs of housing due to tree- and sea-changers leaving major cities during the Covid pandemic. The region saw price rises in rentals of around 40%, pricing many locals out of the housing market, and forcing them to live in tents, cars and caravan parks.
This panel will discuss the aftermath of the floods, not just for Lismore, but across the whole of the Northern Rivers region, where an already vulnerable group of communities continue to suffer the effects of the floods, particularly in relation to an exacerbation of the housing crisis. | SOCIOLOGY IS STILL ALIVE IN THE WEST! |
You may be aware of the recent destruction of the Anthropology and Sociology major at the University of Western Australia, and removal of its staff, as part of a 'restructure' of the Social Sciences there. Despite a very public campaign last year challenging the proposal, UWA has pushed this change through. Social Sciences at UWA is now focused on geography and archaeology, and research 'flagships are the archaeology and geography of regional Western Australia.
We're pleased that this does not mean the death of sociology in WA, however. Longstanding TASA member Farida Fozdar took up a Professorship at Curtin University last week, joining existing sociology staff there. Along with a number of colleagues from UWA's Social Sciences, she will help develop an exciting Global Futures initiative that will link a range of disciplines, building an internationalisation agenda, and connecting Curtin’s five global campuses. Global Futures will enhance capability in a range of areas including intercultural awareness, sustainability, and regional expertise and engagement with the Indo-Pacific region, particularly Africa, Korea and Japan, to add to Curtin's existing expertise.
According to Curtin’s PVC Humanities the initiative “will lead to greater opportunity for global mobility and perspectives that are synonymous with a global university and our One Curtin vision.”
Farida and her WA sociology colleagues will also continue to build the Sociology Out West initiative, providing opportunities for WA sociologists from across sectors to come together for seminars, one day conferences and social events. | Members' Engaging Sociology | Vergani, M., Mansouri, F., Weng, E. et al. | Critical Realist methodology webinar
Co-convenor of TASA’s Applied Sociology Thematic Group Dr Catherine Hastings will be presenting a webinar on Critical Realist methodology in applied social science research, including approaches to evaluation. It will start with a presentation on core features of critical realism, focussing on its practical implications for analysing causal complexity, the use of social theory, the intersection of structure and agency, and working within a framework of interdisciplinary inquiry. She will appraise the influence of critical realism on her research work, using applied and evaluative project examples, particularly focussing on how critical realism provides frameworks to better (in her option!) answer questions such as what generates a problem, for whom, why, and in what contexts. The presentation will be followed by Q&A and discussion.
