July 2022

Hi everyone

Webinar next week: Dr Catherine Hastings

A reminder that co-convenor Catherine Hastings will be presenting a webinar on Critical Realist methodology in applied social science research, including approaches to evaluation. It will start with a presentation on core features of critical realism, focusing on its practical implications for analysing causal complexity, the use of social theory, the intersection of structure and agency, and working within a framework of interdisciplinary inquiry. She will appraise the influence of critical realism on her research work, using applied and evaluative project examples, particularly focusing on how critical realism provides frameworks to better (in her option!) answer questions such as what generates a problem, for whom, why, and in what contexts.  The presentation will be followed by Q&A and discussion.

Our next meeting
Mark down for your diaries! We will be hosting a virtual  TG catch up in August. Sally will forward the calendar invite shortly.
Free resource on Systems mapping
A new e-book is available by Pete Barbrook-Johnson and Alexandra S. Penn called "Systems Mapping: How to build and use causal models of systems" by Palgrave. It provides some practical tips for causal system mapping and related methods. Yay for open access publishing! More info here.

International connections: Applied Worldwide
Applied Worldwide is a great repository for the international Applied Sociologist community. They publish newsletters, calls to action and research profiles. Recently they have been calling for sociologists to publicly speak out on the evidence for the need for reproductive choice and rights. More info here.
