TASA Executive Statement on the Voice
|
Dear ~~first_name~~,
The Executive strongly supports the Voice arising from the Uluru Statement from the Heart, and the upcoming referendum to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.
TASA’s s values of integrity, equity, and transformation define the Association, including the implementation of our aims, and what TASA expects of and encourages in its members. Fundamental to this is to foster principled and informed debate that is founded on rigorous, scholarly research and the importance to recognise the cultures and achievements of First Nation peoples.
TASA recognises that the Voice Referendum presents an opportunity to foster a more inclusive and equitable society. Sociological research has demonstrated that amplifying marginalised voices and promoting participatory decision making can have transformative effects on social cohesion, empowerment and a positive impact on an individual’s life chances.
The Voice Referendum provides Australia with the opportunity to address systemic inequalities and provides a much-needed step in progressing formal commitments with reconciliation. Participatory decision-making processes lead to more informed and comprehensive policy outcomes. In supporting it, we are taking a proactive step toward the realisation of a more democratic society, where all individuals have a chance to contribute to the collective dialogue and decision-making processes.
TASA Executive encourages members and your networks to read the Uluru Statement from the Heart and to engage with the Voice referendum process. TASA Executive affirm their support for the Uluru Statement from the Heart and the ‘yes’ position in the referendum.
