March 2024: MusicLIVES Symposium, TASA 2024, website

Dear ~~first_name~~

Welcome to our first official newsletter!

We are grateful to Sally Daley (TASA Executive Officer) and Tom Barnes (Thematic Groups Convenor) for their guidance and practical assistance with web, email and organisational matters.

We have several updates...

1. MusicLIVES Symposium: 26 June, The Tivoli, Brisbane

Further to previous communications, we are pleased to formally invite thematic group members and interested colleagues to this event. MusicLIVES is presented by Griffith University with support from TASA thematic group funding (including travel bursaries).

The full-day program will include presentations from TASA Sociology of Music thematic group members, spanning music careers, digitalisation, gender, migration, genre, well-being and substance use. The afternoon focuses on live music and research engagement, including a keynote presentation from Dr Catherine Hoad of Massey University (chair of IASPM-ANZ) on Aotearoa/New Zealand initiatives and research-led teaching, and presentations from thematic group members and industry partners on research projects.

For details and registration see our thematic group webpage (Members' News).

2. TASA 2024: 25-29 November, Curtin University & online, Perth

For the first time, when submitting an abstract for this year's TASA conference you will be able to select the Sociology of Music thematic group. It's exciting to have a formal stream within the annual conference, consolidating what has long been present in diverse ways.

Information about TASA 2024 is available on the TASA website.

3. TASA Sociology of Music webpage

The Sociology of Music page is now live on the TASA website.

The page includes members' news and recent publications. Please send relevant announcements and publication details to the thematic group convenors (b.green@griffith.edu.au) for inclusion. Don't be shy! (When academics apologise for "self-promotion", I always think, Do you know any musicians?)

In accordance with the aims of this pioneering thematic group, we intend to develop an online list of Sociology of Music Resources e.g. key texts, online media, details of relevant courses/units. Please share your suggestions for inclusion. Thanks to those who have shared items already.

Best regards,

Ben Green, on behalf of the team, Andy Bennett, Catherine Strong & Sam Whiting
