Dear Sociology of Music thematic group members,
You are invited to attend a talk by our member Steven Threadgold in person at RMIT University, Melbourne City Campus:
What is cultural sociology when culture is platformed and financialised?
Associate Professor Steven Threadgold (University of Newcastle)
Algorithmic, platformed cultural consumption has been absorbed into predictive infrastructures that shape access to finance, insurance and housing. Cultural practices such as streaming music are now captured as data for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and algorithmic assemblages, producing a data gaze that classifies without understanding genre or meaning, treating tastes as proxies for risk through categorisation. What does this mean for cultural sociology?
