Dear Sociology of Youth thematic group members,

You may remember that near the end of last year, there was a survey for you to have input into what the thematic groups could be doing in 2024. There was also a meeting at the 2023 TASA Symposium in November 2023 where we discussed the outcomes of the survey, and came up with some ideas going forward. (such a long time ago now....).

The outcome of the survey was that the thematic group would like to:

  • choose a social media platform and members can post about research, job ads, publications etc.
  • a schedule of regular zoom presentations over the year, where we vary the time of day
  • City meet ups face to face where there is interest
  • Keep up the “Spotlight On” blog posts
Other ideas that came up at the Symposium were:
  • A workshop on publishing in academic journals
  • a thematic group dinner at the next conference
  • matching people with mentors
  • joint events with Sociology of Education, given many young people are in education, or have made a decision to opt out
Some progress has been made on putting these ideas into action. You should have received the email inviting you to a face to face social catch up in Adelaide, at 5pm, next Thursday February 15th at Nearly Bar (179 Hindley St, Adelaide). Please get in touch with Sam at sam.whiting@unisa.edu.au to let him know if you can make it.

LinkedIn was the most popular choice of social media platform for TASA Youth. I'd like to invite you to join the new TASA Youth LinkedIn group, at

https://www.linkedin.com/groups/14390350/

After the implosion of Twitter, this is our new place for the TASA Sociology of Youth thematic group to meet and find out what's happening. Let's use this group to hear about new publications; get to know people and build our network; find people interested in collaboration; let people know about our research; find or publicise job and scholarship opportunities; arrange face to face social events; and bounce ideas around.

How else can you get involved?
We only have one convenor at the moment (me), and I'd love some help in putting the rest of the ideas into action. So, let me know if you'd be able to:
  • organise a social event in your city
  • help out with developing a schedule of zoom presentations
  • writing a Spotlight On post about yourself
  • reposting something about sociology of youth to the LinkedIn group
Thanks for getting this far!
