Biography
Dr Habib A. Moghimi teaches at the University of Sydney (USYD) and is a member of the International Visual Sociology Association (IVSA) and the International Sociological Association’s (ISA) RC57 Visual Sociology thematic group. Additionally, he serves as the convenor of The Australian Sociological Association’s (TASA) Sociology of Media thematic group.
He combines critical social theory with creative research methods to gain new insights into how media represents real life. After completing his PhD on the representation of everyday life in Iranian cinema at the University of Sydney, his recent publication defines sociological film based on ideas from public sociology. His manuscripts, currently under publication, focus on censorship in Iranian cinema, the limits of postcolonial understanding of Islamophobia, and the Multimodal Construction of Ukrainian, Afghan, and Syrian Refugees in Neoliberal Multiculturalism of Australia and Canada. He is currently writing a book on the relationship between sociology and documentary filmmaking.
He produced six short films under the supervision of the Golden Palm winner, Abbas Kiarostami, in 2016. In 2018, he made a documentary called Arrhythmia, aiming to depict the everyday boredom experienced by people with disabilities in Iran. Arrhythmia had its premiere screening at the 37th IVSA conference in 2019. The documentary was also screened at the Interdoc Film Festival, Arte TV, Festival Cinemistica, and Festival Mental – Mental Health Arts and Film Festival.
Since 2018, he has taught various Sociology and Digital Cultures courses at the University of Sydney. Additionally, he has conducted video-making workshops that address various postmodern crises, such as climate change, economic crises, and pandemics at the University of Sydney. In 2022, he received the USYD Dean’s Citation for Excellence in Tutorials with Distinction and the USYD Faculty of Science Learning and Teaching Award for Outstanding Teaching.
